BACKGROUND: By 2016, Mahalakshmi, a 64-year-old retired professor in a reputed Agriculture University, had rendered 36 years of service as an academician, administrator, scientist, and director. As a member of faculty specializing in Interior Design, her research had focused on the areas of housing, ergonomics, and floral preservation. She had attained superannuation in 2016 and then pursued her passion for preserving fresh flowers through the establishment of Lyo Florals in 2018.. THE MENTOR: Eager to start a company and put the technique to work, Mahalakshmi approached the Intellectual Property Facilitation Centre (IPFC) at the National Institute for Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (ni-msme) , for guidance to protect her innovation before the actual launch of the product in the market.. MARKETING THE PRODUCT: Mahalakshmi started promoting the product by giving interviews to print and electronic media to reach the target customers. She also displayed the products online for selling (Refer to Exhibit II). In 2017, Mahalakshmi contributed an article to be published in Tulip Magazine, a reputed flower periodical.. THORNY ROAD AHEAD?: The process of preserving flowers was time consuming and involved six stages spread over fifteen days (Refer to Exhibit III for the six stages). Though the product was available online, there were very few takers. As the product was fragile, its packaging had to be customized as per its design and size..
